Lowest Cost of Energy
The key driver in any tidal energy scheme is the Lowest Cost of Energy. CSB Consilium has a LCoE model for tidal range energy developments. Using simplified designs for the embankment, sluice and turbine caissons and cost models for the turbines and development an estimate for the Capital Cost of any scheme can be obtained. Using a model for the Operation and Maintenance costs together with the energy yield estimates from the 0D models permits the LCoE to be obtained for each scheme.
The LCoE model developed by CSB Consilium uses a Monte-Carlo approach, with a million individual simulations, to provide not only the mean value but also a standard deviation. The standard deviation gives a measure of insight into the potential scale of cost risk associated with the project at an early stage.
By repeatedly calculating the LCoE for different numbers of turbines and sluices the optimum number can be selected. This can then be repeated for different turbine sizes or power rating and for each wall line chosen.
